A Shadow Over Ever – an excerpt

0

Last night was an amazing night for me. I have wanted to see the release of my novel A Shadow Over Ever for a long, long time and it’s amazing to finally have it out. Here is a sample from deeper in the book, when things are established and the true danger is becoming apparent.

This scene is my little homage to DAWN OF THE DEAD and sets two of the characters, brothers Terrence and Cloot against a mall full of the living dead. The world is changing, you see, due to a war between Heaven and the first children of Eden and the war is taking its toll on all of existence.

(this is from an earlier draft of the book so don’t mind any grammar bumps, they’ve been fixed!)

Fifteen minutes and about a hundred pounds of weaponry and ammo later the three of them, Terrence, Cloot, and Warren a.k.a. Flyboy, re-enter the fray. They are all three armed with as much as they can carry, which for Warren is the small squirrel rifle Cloot had been carrying, but are ready for a war, though Warren looks rather queasy under the bright mall lights. Before them await the dead, the smell of their rot filling the hallway, suffocating their minds. They must have heard the three inside the store arguing because as soon as they left Kill World they found themselves all but surround already by them. And as the three of them prepare for combat the dead approach slowly, tightening their circle and readying for an attack. The three men level their weapons. Beneath the sound of the shuffling they can hear the screams coming from the underwear store. The dead though, they make no sound. The only sound they make is the sound of their movement, which sounds like paper being rubbed together, and it is a chilling sound. And slowly do they approach, their limbs stiff, bodies frail, one two falling apart as they approach. And on seeing them Warren lets loose a pathetic whimper and retches onto himself, washing his overalls in orange, dropping the gun, and falling limply against the wall. Terrence and Cloot turn to him, eyes wide, pulled from their own fear by his falling, and suddenly they realize that it’s too late to do anything else but fight. And on come the dead, their arms reaching out, their bodies moving slowly, so slowly, their jaws opening wide in soundless moan. And behind them come the screams of the trapped people again. And within Terrence and Cloot lay trapped their screams.

“Pick up that goddamn gun Flyboy, get it, get it goddammit…”

  “I…no, no…I can’t…”

“You can and you will goddammit. Too late to run chicken now. You got no choice. None of us got any other choice. Fight or die, that’s the choice we gots. ‘Cause them fuckers there don’t care ‘bout you but to kill you. You wanna die motherfucker? If you do wanna die then we’ll do it for ‘em and save you the pain and get you outta our goddamn hair. ‘Cause if you ain’t gonna fight yer a liability to us and we ain’t gonna have that.”

Terrence raises his rifle and aims it at Warren’s head; taking dead aim on his quivering face. Once, a few days ago, he would barely have done this as a joke but now, after the Calling Station and the baby, there is no turning back. Cloot looks away, uncertain what to do anymore, looking instead to the dead coming closer to them as he raises his own handgun.

“No, don’t look away brother. You need to see this. This is war. This is…this is war…and in war there ain’t no thing as prisoners…close yer eyes Warren, just close yer eyes…”

A Note To Friends And A Press Release – Hooray?

Eighteen years ago I began a journey.  It started with a short, weird little story about an angry man with a pumpkin on his head and it became the seed for what would eventually become my first and perhaps only novel.  This novel has been with me for a long time.  From that short story it grew to a second, then a third, then a final story.  This novel was never intended to be as such, but I fell in love with the cantankerous old man in it, and I fell in love with the world where he lived, bleak as it can be at times.  A SHADOW OVER EVER truly is one of the things I am very proud of because it took a long time to get it out, to get it to the world, but it was worth it.

On Friday, August 10th I am celebrating the release of my novel by having a release party with my dear friend Charles Shaver, who will also be releasing books that night.  This is my way to celebrate not just this book, but all of the books, and the long journey it took to get them out.  I will have my art and books on display and for sale but more than that I will have stories and art dating back to when I was still just a kid in the ’80s and ‘90s so we can see the weird little path that this and all my stories took.

This night isn’t about me, about my book, but about you, all of you.  Because without the friendship and encouragement of all of you there would be no art, no stories, and certainly no books.

There will be snacks, and music, and lots of awesome on hand on August 10th from 6 – 9pm right downtown in Flint at 625 S. Saginaw St., and I really hope you can make it.

As far as I have had my blogs, and we’re talking a lot of time now, a lot of years, since nearly 2000 so that’s a lot of years and a lot of rambling and as much as I may like to think I have nothing but pearls of wisdom and deep thoughts to offer the fact really is that well, a lot of what I write is rambling. Especially in the early days. But then, there was a catharsis in it all. Blogs/journals were a place to exorcise yourself and it felt good if you were careful and not too revelatory. I can’t say I learned a lot from it but it felt good in the early days to know that some of what I was saying was reaching someone and was heard, because that matters. In an era where we are all struggling to be heard but rarely listen the blog has changed. It seems that it is  more about Me and less about Us. It’s not about trying to connect but trying to differentiate as so many of us push to get noticed, to get seen, and to get famous.

Fame.

The thing about fame is that it is a kiss without emotion. It feels good when you’re doing it but when it’s done, when it’s gone, it meant little and lead to nothing.

Fame.

What I offer you, friend is not a path to fame, it is not a path to riches, but it is a path towards finding that part of yourself that we sometimes neglect and I offer that part water and light and hope.

Traditional publishing is dead.

Long live traditional publishing!

I come to you as a writer, an author, but not one of any great name or legacy but the thing is, that’s ok. I didn’t get into writing to become a legend, I got into it to amuse myself, to exercise my mind, and to just tell stories. And that is what matters to me, the stories. Sure, I want to sell some books, I want to make some money because this is Art but this is business too and you can’t forget that. You can’t. When you first start writing you have to be willing to ‘give it away’, as much as you can do because these are stories, nothing more BUT nothing less. A story alone may not have power but stories together gather a lot of power and a lot of strength. So you can give away a short story or poem here and there just so you can give people a chance to get to know you. Get to know your work.

Consider writing a job, even if it isn’t.

Sometimes you have to put in that training time to prove yourself, and to some people, you’ll never get hired but that doesn’t mean that you stop working at it, that you stop writing, it just means that you find a different employer.

Publishing has changed. It’s not hard to see it but that doesn’t make it any less shocking and worrisome. There are just not those smaller presses anymore that will put out the lesser and unknown authors. It’s too expensive to print, promote, and to release and ship these things and when the market crashed in recent years it was a way to clean house and that house cleaning meant a lot of smaller publishers died and others went wholly digital, and the rest, the rest focused on commodities. And there’s the rub – these stories, these books are commodities. They are ‘goods’. And as such you have to accept that some people will value your work more than others. It doesn’t mean that your work is better  than anyone from Joe Writer that writes fan fiction for fun or any worse than Steinbeck, Hemingway, or King. It just means that the market bears what it bears and right now, in mid-2012 classy smut is in. Just as vampires were in, just as zombies were in, just as bios were in and on and on. If you have the right story at the right time you can make some good money (with a lot of work and a lucky break) but that doesn’t mean that your story is necessarily better than someone with the right story at the wrong time.

That’s the thing too, being a business, if you are going to pursue it seriously then you have to make the decision of why you write – for profit and fame or for fun and to tell stories? Either path is valid, believe me, but I offer that it’s better to do something you love and suffer than to suffer for something you’re doing for money because unless that money is coming in it’s going to be a waste of time.

Slowly I am inching towards something and that something is this -

If you love to write…write.

Write.

WRITE!

And write your ass off. Write as much as you can and stretch yourself. Write blogs, reviews, stories, poems, and keep it varied. Why? Because the more you grow and challenge yourself and your writing the better at it you become. Fall in love with writing. That’s the key.

Make your own schedule.

Scheduling is a big thing for writers and it makes sense because the further you get from it the more of the threads you lose. It can still be a good story but you’ll lose your passion for it and that’s dangerous. It’s easy to get distracted from writing and you need to learn the discipline it takes to see projects through. Everyone can write a story or poem, not everyone can finish those things and see them through to completion.

Learn.

You have to be up for learning and the biggest thing you can learn is to edit. It will ALWAYS be helpful to get the opinions of others but the first opinion you need and in many cases the most important is your own because YOU need to feel that this is the story you meant to write, that you wanted to tell, and that it’s told how you meant to tell it.

For me I write, I let it sit, then I go back to it and go through it and see what I think and change and fix from there. My short fiction I am pretty picky about since I prefer to decide how that plays out but the novel, that thing needed other eyes on it. Had to have outside editing because it was so big that if I was missing some things I had to find them and fix them and make them work.

Publish!

Now, this is where you are getting MY advice and most writers may disagree with me but to hell with them. I am telling you to publish. Now, this means a lot of things to a lot of people but for me it means this – get your work out there.

It’s great to publish a piece here and a piece there and it’s something to work on because you need to go through that and heck, maybe you break through with something and you can get started on things in a different way.  But for me publishing has kept me going. I don’t know that I’d suggest doing it how I have done it but there’s something to be learned.

After you’ve been writing for a bit and have a body of work, and I think this works better with stories, then you need to start thinking about what you want to do with them. Stories work easier because if you write a novel and put that much time in you will want to pursue traditional publishing, just so you know you did. Stories are good because you can put a collection together of anything from three stories on depending on length and format and you have something valid. I cut my teeth with ‘zines and chapbooks but with services like Create Space and Lulu you have the chance to put out a professional looking book and that means so much more.

So why the hell are you doing this?

Because until you have that book in your hands, until you see why you do this, and until you have to start learning how to promote yourself and your book and how to market and how to price and how to sell your work you are just working with theories. Books make you move from theory to practice. And you need to know what you are working with and you need to learn what works and doesn’t. In essence, you need to learn to be a sales person because that is part of the deal now. And for me, seeing what it becomes, seeing what stories are meant to be, it really brought it all home and made it real and made me love it all the more.

Follow Your Path.

Every writer out there has THEIR way to do things and THEIR way to become successful and all that other crap but here’s the deal – this is your journey, your path, and you need to find your own way. Listen to what everyone says, even mopes like me, but in the end you have to decide the course you need to take. Once upon a time I let someone tell me I was no artist and I quit art for a looong time after that and that’s my fault. I can’t imagine where I’d be if I hadn’t listened to them. I may not have been a great artist but I may have been a happier person because I loved art and I shouldn’t have let someone talk me out of that love.

So write.

Write not because you have to but because you want to and you want to share your stories. There are so many options now. E-books, podcasts, open mic nights, chapbooks, self publishing, comic conventions, horror conventions, sci-fi cons, and on and on and on. There are so many options and so many resources and so many of us, so many of us writers out there that you don’t have to be alone. Remember that. It gets pretty lonely being a writer and that loneliness doesn’t go away easy but you are not alone.

You’re never alone.

This is your journey. These are your stories. If I can impart anything unto you it’s that you need to let yourself dream, let yourself be in love with the writing, let yourself struggle and strive, and finally, let yourself do this and see what happens.

No one promises us a future, we have to make it, and as writers that’s easy because we’re well versed in writing the future, the past, and everything in between, and we should be damned before we let someone talk us out of being in love with writing and pursuing our dreams.

A Shadow Over Ever – a novel about the end

0

Pete Anders is a lonely man. An angry man. A man who has reached the end of his patience and sanity and a man who has chosen Halloween as the night he will get his revenge. What Pete doesn’t see though are the strings that are leading him towards a violent end where he can no longer be a potential threat to the people who have set him along his dark path. Far beyond all of this though is a greater tale, the story of the beginning and the end of all things. The story of the unmaking of existence. And a war that Pete Anders will soon become a player in. And Pete, simple, angry old Pete Anders is far more powerful than anyone could ever have bargained for, and far more dangerous as well and he’ll be damned if he misses out on the end of the world and he may be damned if he chooses to play a part in it.

Woo! 500 posts. Woo…And Some Book Stuffs!

I was totally going to honor this momentous occasion with a deep, impassioned post about blogging these, wow, last ten years + but, darn it, I wanted to share some more book stuff so that shall have to wait.

Odds are it’d just be stuff I have already said anyway.

HA.

I have had an awful time coming up with an effective cover for this book. I had hoped at one point to get an artist to do up a cover, had mused over doing the art myself, shoot, somewhere there are about a dozen attempts at covers (which I suppose is similar to a young band drawing and re-drawing their name and logo). I was never happy though. I just couldn’t come up with the right image that stood as the flag for what this book was. I couldn’t scratch that nagging itch that something wasn’t working.

This year, as I was having the book edited by a friend I finally started to get the germs in my brain for what I wanted. A neighbor in the building where I was living had held onto her Halloween pumpkin well into Winter and since the building’s first floor is so cold I thought that, hmm…perhaps I can use it, so I hid it away for later use. Well, I finally got the props I needed and during a warm turn earlier this year I put the elements together and took some photos.

These are a few of the raw pictures that I took and out of all of the images one of them became the cover. So, here you go, a sampling of what the cover will sorta look like.

Sorta. ImageImageImage

Natural Bored Salesman

I am no sales person.

Salesman.

Whatever.

I ain’t it.

I wish I was, I do, really.  A lot of my jobs I have had would have been waaay easier.  Alas, it was not meant to be.  I hate asking for help and asking someone to buy something, pitching them on something, is just not my thing.  I have a hard time with it because to me either someone wants to buy something or they don’t.  Simple as that, right?  Being an artist and writer though, that doesn’t serve me very well.

For some reason when it comes to books and art you have to really pitch it to people.

Or do you?

I am not sure.

I know that I have been doing conventions on and off, mostly on, since 1994 and have never tried to ‘sell’ people on my stuff.  I just don’t want to.  I figure if my stuff is solid it will sell. I always get put near the hard sell jerks that are one part carnival barker and one part megaphone.  The heck of it is that these jerks sell.  They sell like crazy.  So is it that their product is stronger than mine, which is a distinct possibility, or is it that they are so aggressive that people can’t say no.  Literally.  They can’t say no.  And you know what?  There are few things as demoralizing as being outsold by a first time author selling a $25 softcover novel and with no real flair to his display or being outsold by a middle aged woman dressed as an elf (wearing that outfit ALL THREE DAYS of the con) with a silly castle display behind her and selling a really typical book about elves and fairies and such.  That kicks your ego down a little.

Ok, a lot.

Then there is the social networking thing.  I try it, I tell people what I am working on and what I have to offer and all but there’s a point of saturation where people have either bought your stuff or they are not going to.  Unless you have that many new ‘friends’, ‘followers’, or are just blowing up in some way I can’t see continually selling yourself and your product.  Events are different.  You have to keep hammering on events because people forget.  But product, man, I just can’t.  It makes me feel cheap.  I would love to have people, anyone, buying my stuff, but I don’t like going on and on about it to friends.  Feels dirty, dirty in the not at all fun sort of way.

So what do you do?

What do I do?

Beats me, kids.

I may take up competitive writing.  Like a write club sort of thing where you go and write stuff against someone in a ring, without, I dunno, pants on.  Wait. No one needs to see that.

The easiest thing is a gimmick, a scheme, and in the end I suppose we’re all looking for that golden gimmick, that wicked hook to reel in the sales.  Until you are known it is about who you know and how people will know you.  And there is a balancing act of making sure that the art, the writing doesn’t take a back seat to the persona, to the hook, to the gimmick.  I see so many artists and they sell, sure, but they sell because people are drawn to the persona more than the work.  I want to sell because people like what I am putting out, not because they think I am weird.  Heck, you get weird for free here, buddy.  Free every day.

So here I am, looking for my hook, working out my gimmick, and wondering if you’ll even care.

Hmm…

Looking for Agents and Publishers In All the Wrong Places

0

I, like about a ma-JILLION writers out there, am looking to generate some interest in a book. The book in question is my novel A Shadow Over Ever. I love the heck out of this book, and I am not saying that just because I began working on it eighteen years ago. Ok, that’s a reason to love it, let’s not be ridiculous here. I truly do love this book. It is something I never would have imagined I’d be capable of when I began writing it as a short story back in 1994. Since that time it has grown, matured, and if you look close, it has a couple whiskers.

Awww!

Well, I have not had the easiest time finding someone to either publish or represent the book so I figured I would post some info about the book here in case someone happened by and was interested in it. Can’t hurt, right?

Right?

I believe in this book. Completely. And I will self publish it if I have to but I’d rather not. I want this to have a chance to make it into more hands than self publishing can lead to.

So, for your consideration, dear reader -

A Shadow Over Ever

Approximately 180,000 words

A Shadow Over Ever is the story of Pete Anders, a man who had wanted nothing in the world but to remain anonymous but who is pulled into the heart of the greatest conflict to ever face Mankind and forced to become a hero for a world he no longer believes in.

After the death of his beloved his mind turns to vengeance and he turns his rage towards the town that has always treated him as an exile. His revenge is short lived though when his conscience gets the better of him but his brother, watching as Pete goes mad, isn’t ready for the blood to stop and continues the killing and creates the legend of Pete. When Pete finds he’s been framed it’s too late and death is the only thing to comfort him.

Even in death though there is no comfort for Pete, as he is awakened in his grave by the sounds of teenagers having sex on his grave. This time he decides that his vengeance is best served going after the people responsible for the death of his beloved and so he hunts them down one, by one, until he is left to face his brother at his very own grave. By this point though Pete’s need for blood has been satisfied and all he wants is to be done with everything and so he allows his brother to finish him in the hopes to find peace.

There is no peace for Pete Anders though and after his earthly death his journey begins in earnest. He awakens in Hell and is to be escorted to a private audience before the Creator, who is engaged in a war with its last remaining sibling. This sibling is the utter opposite of the Creator, and is a Destroyer and seeks to end all things in existence. Humanity is the last remaining thing standing between this destroyer and its goal. Life will not end without a fight though and, for reasons Pete will struggle to understand, he has been chosen as the man to lead the forces of the Creator against this enemy and against the First Children of Eden, who have taken sides with the darkness.

In a war that will engulf Mankind and will push a man to find the greatness in himself and to conquer the darkness that has always plagued him in order to defeat a true Darkness, everything is at risk as the last days for existence play out.

Pete Anders never asked for forgiveness but in order to become whole he must find forgiveness in himself and save a world he’s never felt a part of and trust in a god he’s never believed in.

About author Chris Ringler and his book -

A Shadow Over Ever is an epic fantasy/horror story about one man’s quest to save a world he doesn’t believe in any more and who must not only find belief in Mankind, but in himself as well. This is a story that deals with a war between the forces of heaven and the first children of Eden, in a fight that could mean the end of all existence. The idea behind the book is to examine ideas of redemption, faith, and to make a hero of a character many may initially see as a villain. This is a dark novel with touches of horror and fantasy and could be best classified as horror. I have completed work on the book and it is approximately 180,000 words.

In my career I have published six books from horror to fairy tale and have had several stories published. In 2011 I won Best In Blood for the website Horroraddicts and have had stories on their podcast and was published in Bare Bone #s 6, 7, and 9 as well as having had a story published in the November, 2005 issue of Cthulhu Sex Magazine. I have also received honorable mention in The Year’s Best Fantasy and Horror #19s and 20. I am very active in the promotion of my books and do several art shows and conventions each year to promote my work.

Manda and the Pandas

Amanda was mad.

No, she was furious.

She looked out into the cold, dark night and saw nothing but green grass and green trees and green, green, green.

This was ridiculous.

It was Christmas Eve and there was no snow in sight. Not a bit, not an inch, there was not even a glimpse of any sort of snow anywhere and it didn’t look as if that was going to change anytime soon, and that was just ridiculous.

Welcome to Willow Falls, the smallest province in the Kingdom of Man and a place where you could have snow every day for a year and then have three weeks of sunlight with no night in sight. This sort of weather kept things interesting, to say the least, but it didn’t make things easy if you wanted to make plans. Amanda had been working on assignment taking pictures for the Kingdom Times for the past three weeks, covering the first national tour of the newly crowned Queen Messy and had been looking forward to her winter vacation. Winter was the time of the Renewal Festival which was a time of family and friends and where people would decorate their homes to give thanks to the gods of old, the gods of new, and to all the magic that made their world possible. For Amanda, the Renewal Festival meant that she’d get a much needed week off to see her boyfriend, her family, and to spend time with her dog. Ah, but things weren’t working out the way she’d hoped, not in the least.

None of this was to say she hadn’t enjoyed her tour, and she’d taken advantage of her travels with the Queen and her small entourage and had done some shopping in the more exotic shops and had gotten some gifts that really seemed to speak to the people she was buying them for. She was proudest of the Burping Bumberbash, which her mother was bound to love. She loved this time of year and as the days turned colder, her mind turned more and more to Renewal Eve and thoughts of her loved ones. All across the lands snow was beginning to fall, getting Manda giddy with excitement over the coming holidays. It seemed that everyone was getting into the spirit of things too as Messy herself had come to Amanda’s room as she was packing to bring her a special gift. The Queen had been much impressed with the talent of the young photographer and wanted to give her a gift that she might get some use from. Messy had gotten some clay from the village of Perrian, a place known for its fine potters and sculptors, and had made a simple enough looking bowl but one which, when it was filled with water, became something very powerful when the time was right.

Amanda didn’t quite understand why it was that Queen Messy was giving her this bowl which, though pretty and all, was an odd sort of gift, but she took it, thanked her highness, and packed it away. Amanda hurried so she could make it in time to the vanneroo she had rented. The driver seemed delighted though to be surrounded by the Queen and her aides and didn’t mind that Amanda was so late and even helped her with her bag. Content that she was going to have the sort of Renewal Festival her boyfriend always told her about, and which she’d heard tell of in the songs that people sang on their tour, Amanda fell into a deep sleep and dreamt.

@@@@@In her dreams she was with her friends, family, and boyfriend, sitting around the great, magical flame that would be conjured for all to tell stories around and to share the things they’d seen and done since the last time everyone had met. It was a wonderful dream but it was ended by the driver as he shook her awake.

“We’re here Miss, we’re here in Willow Falls.”

Amanda smiled and stretched inside the cab of the vaneroo as she got her backpack and slung it over her shoulder. The driver stood aside and let Amanda out and she stepped out into what she expected to be snow. When there was no corresponding crunch to her step she looked down and saw grass, and beyond that more grass, and grass, and grass, and grass.

Everything was green.

Winter hadn’t even made it yet and festival was only a day away.

Amanda’s heart sank.

She didn’t see the driver as he took her bag off of the vaneroo and didn’t hear him as he bid her a happy festival and didn’t notice at all when he drove off into the night.

All Amanda knew was that it was time for Renewal and there was no snow in sight.

Every story Amanda had ever heard about the festival told about how beautiful the snow was, and how it made everything seem so perfect. This was the first time she’d be celebrating the Renewal with anyone other than her mother and dog and realizing that she wasn’t going to have snow for her first Renewal with her boyfriend brought tears to her eyes.

She made her way home and saw that her message globe was blinking with messages but ignored it. She didn’t want anyone to know she was home yet. She had a day, a day to make things right, to make it snow, and whatever it took, she was going to do it.

Amanda sat on her couch and her dog nuzzled up alongside her and put his head in her lap. She petted him, as they both lay there, but her mind was somewhere else.

It was late when Amanda decided she had a place to start, somewhere she might find an answer, but as much as she wanted to get something done, she knew she had to get some rest.

So she slept.

And she dreamt.

And in her dreams it snowed.

The next morning Amanda got up early and dressed quickly then made her way to the office of the town elder. Her name was Iridor and she had inherited her mantle from her brother, who had been lost in a long ago battle with a tribe from the Great Thicket, but she had become the voice of reason in an age that had been very troubled until recently. Amanda came to Iridor and asked her one question and one question only – why?

That was all it took Iridor because she had seen Amanda coming to her in a Seeing Stone and had heard similar questions from the others in town. Why wasn’t it snowing, they all asked.

Why?

“It is the pandas, my dear. You see, they have always been jealous of our Renewal Festival and the things we share with one another in this time. They have no such customs and they resent that we do.”

Amanda frowned.

“But Iridor, how can they do this? What power do they have over the elements? How can they stop it from snowing?”

“Their elder possesses the Winter globe, one of the four globes the Narcissan kings had made for them so they might control the weather. The other three, Spring, Summer, and Fall, are lost, but the Winter globe came into the possession of the pandas and it seems they’ve decided to finally use it.”

“But what can we do to make them stop this? How do we convince them that this is wrong?”

“I would imagine that if the new queen were too…”

“There is no time for that though, madam Iridor. Tonight is Renewal Eve.”

“Then I guess for this year, there will be no snow. I am sorry child.”

Amanda’s frown deepened, but beneath it, there laid a smile waiting to be born.
